Book Review – Dining With Canadian Railways

This exceptional book published in Canada by Will Smith and Ralph Beaumont in 2018, is not only a historical gem for railway buffs but also a nostalgic look back at the way things used to be in an era when travel was glamorous and a train trip might have been the once-in-a-lifetime event for many people.

Dining With Canadian Railways has compiled a comprehensive documentation of the many china patterns used by the company’s different divisions which included their railways, hotels, restaurants, steamships and airlines. Service for passengers was provided with class and distinction in each division, and meals served on china further enhanced a vacation. CPR was well aware of the value of this kind of service and offered it across their broad network of transportation.

Beautifully illustrated, the book is interesting and informative.  The china patterns evoke memories of travelling in style, something that, sadly. doesn’t seem to happen as often in this day and age. There are over 250 chinaware patterns identified and over 500 photos in this 248 page book, selected from 30 years of research.
